Planning an exterior renovation can feel overwhelming, especially if you've never done major work on your home before. I'm Nico from Pallotta Home Improvement, and I've handled hundreds of exterior projects throughout Warren County. Here's what you should do before we start working on your windows, siding, doors, or gutters to make sure everything goes smoothly.
Get Clear on What You Want Fixed
Before I come out for an estimate, think about what problems you're trying to solve. Are you dealing with drafty windows that make rooms uncomfortable? Siding that's letting moisture in? Gutters that overflow every time it rains?
The more specific you can be about what's bothering you, the better I can target the solution. Instead of saying "my house needs work," tell me "the upstairs bedrooms are always cold" or "water pools by the foundation after storms."
Plan for Weather and Timing
Ohio weather doesn't always cooperate with construction schedules. I typically plan exterior work for spring through fall, but even then we might hit unexpected rain or high winds.
If you're flexible on timing, that helps me schedule around weather delays. If you need work done by a specific date — like before winter or before putting your house on the market — let me know upfront so we can plan accordingly.
Clear the Work Areas
Before I arrive, you'll want to clear the areas where we'll be working:
Around Windows:
- Move furniture away from interior walls
- Take down curtains or blinds
- Remove window treatments that might get damaged
Around Siding:
- Clear landscaping and decorations from exterior walls
- Move outdoor furniture, grills, and equipment away from the house
- Trim back bushes or plants that are close to the work area
Around Gutters:
- Make sure we have clear access to all sides of your home
- Move vehicles out of driveways if needed for ladder placement
Protect Your Belongings
Even though I'm careful with your property, renovation work can be dusty and disruptive. Here's what I recommend:
- Cover furniture in rooms where we'll be working on windows
- Remove valuable or fragile items from work areas
- Expect some dust and debris — it's normal with this type of work
- Keep pets indoors or in a safe area away from the work zone
Prepare for Disruption
Exterior work means some temporary inconvenience. Here's what to expect:
Noise: Power tools, hammers, and general construction sounds during normal working hours
Access: Workers will need to move around your property throughout the day
Utilities: We might need to temporarily disconnect power to exterior outlets
Security: Windows and doors might be removed temporarily during installation
Communicate with Your Neighbors
Let your neighbors know you're having work done, especially if we'll be using ladders or equipment near property lines. Most people appreciate the heads up, and it prevents misunderstandings.
Get Your Permits Sorted
For most window and door replacements, permits aren't required. But for larger siding projects or structural changes, they might be.
I handle permit applications for my customers — it's part of the service. I know the requirements in Warren County and surrounding areas, so you don't have to figure out the paperwork yourself.
Plan for Payment
I'll give you a clear estimate upfront with no hidden fees. Most of my customers pay half down to start the project and the balance when we're finished.
If you're dealing with insurance for storm damage, I can work directly with your adjuster to make sure everything is covered properly.
What I Handle on My End
You don't need to worry about:
- Ordering materials (I handle all of that)
- Coordinating delivery schedules
- Disposing of old materials
- Daily cleanup of the work area
- Making sure everything meets local building codes
Day of Installation
On installation day, I'll walk through the plan with you before we start. I'll show you exactly what we're doing and answer any questions you have.
During the work, feel free to check on progress, but please stay clear of active work areas for safety. I'll let you know when it's safe to take a look at what we're doing.
After We're Done
Before I consider the job complete, we'll do a final walkthrough together. I'll show you how everything works, what maintenance is needed, and explain your warranty coverage.
I don't disappear after the job is done. If you have questions or concerns after installation, just call me. Good work should last, and I make sure it does.
The Bottom Line
Most of the preparation work is just common sense — clear the area, protect your stuff, and be ready for some temporary disruption. The more prepared you are, the smoother the project goes.
I've handled enough exterior projects in Lebanon, Mason, West Chester, and the surrounding areas to know what works. If you have questions about preparing for your specific project, I'm happy to walk through it with you during our initial consultation.
The goal is to get your home improved with as little hassle as possible. Good preparation makes that happen.
